Gneiss belongs to metamorphic rocks (transformed rocks) – one of the three major types of rocks that build up the earth’s crust. They are formed from igneous or sedimentary rocks (as well as other metamorphic rocks sometimes) by metamorphism under high temperature or pressure and related chemical processes. Metamorphism causes changes in mineral composition, and sometimes also chemical composition of rocks and their texture. Basic components of gneiss are quarztite and feldspar, but other minerals such as mica or amphibole can also be found.
Gneiss stone bark is a perfect decorative material thanks to several features. Bits of quartzite create a shiny silver layer. The entire stone is striped, combining the shades of white, black, yellow and grey. Its uneven texture resembles tree bark, making gneiss perfectly fit into any natural surroundings. It is also a common choice for many features of landscape. Thanks to its properties, it has replaced traditional bark. Unlike traditional product, stone bark does not rot, it will not be blown away by the wind or scattered by animals. Multiple applications include creating rockeries, water gardens, borders and edgings. Gneiss is also aproppriate material for filling pots and gabions.
Additional advantage is protecting the soil from weed growth and moisture loss.
